In this Fallout 76 Guide we’re going to be looking at your C.A.M.P. , giving you some tips and advice on how to Build a successful one, and showing you some things that you may not have known. If you’re having trouble with your C.A.M.P. then read on for some information that may save you a lot of time, and frustration.

Fallout 76 How to Build a Successful C.A.M.P.

Although your C.A.M.P. in Fallout 76 works much the way Settlements did in Fallout 4, there are some differences, and changes. To begin let’s look at the major differences, so that you can see how they will effect Fallout 76’s gameplay.

Building your C.A.M.P. is one of the funnest things to do in Fallout 76.

Fallout 76 C.A.M.P. vs. Fallout 4 Settlement

The main difference between a Fallout 76 C.A.M.P. and a Fallout 4 Settlement is: SIZE. Settlements in Fallout 4 were very large, and your C.A.M.P. in Fallout 76 is much much smaller. You’ll only be able to Build a fraction of the amount you could in Fallout 4, however, this is expected to increase as the game gets more content.

There are no NPCs to put to work in your C.A.M.P. which means that it really needs no management whatsoever, and the only time you will spend there in your C.A.M.P. is Building, Crafting, or harvesting Food and/or Water. If you are in a group with another player you can, however, help them Build their C.A.M.P. using your own Materials (which is kind of cool).

You can see the total size of my C.A.M.P. here, which is much smaller than Fallout 4 Settlements.

Enemies still attack, so you will still need to build defenses. These events are random, so you won’t know exactly when they are coming, but they seem to occur more often if you build your C.A.M.P. near an area with known hostiles. Build somewhere out of the way, and as far away from anyone as you can, players included. Players can “raid” your food and water there, so you don’t want them coming around anymore often than necessary.

Moving Your Camp

In Fallout 76 players can move their C.A.M.P. any time they wish for a cost in Caps. The cost goes up based on two factors: how high of level you are, and how far you want to move your C.A.M.P. from its existing location. If you cannot afford the cost, then you cannot move it.

In order to move your C.A.M.P. press “O” on PS4, and then press L1 in order to pull up your C.A.M.P. You will then have to find a location that you can then place, and your C.A.M.P. will glow green if it is placeable in the current location. If it isn’t you will need to continue moving around until you find one. You cannot place your C.A.M.P. too close to other players’, or near named Locations in the game.

You can only place your C.A.M.P. when it looks green like in the picture.

Choosing a Suitable Location for Your C.A.M.P.

When determining where to place your C.A.M.P. (assuming you can place it where you want), you’ll need to take into account a couple of factors. First, you don’t want to build it near an area with known hostiles. This is because it will get attacked more frequently, resulting in damage you will need to repair, which wastes resources. Finding an area with no hostiles doesn’t guarantee you won’t be attacked, but will lower the frequency.

Sometimes when you log out of the game your C.A.M.P. will not be there when you log back in. Whether this is because of a bug, or because someone else has their C.A.M.P. in your spot, it can happen. It’s extremely frustrating when it does, because it means you have to setup somewhere else. Try to build somewhere that you think other players are less likely to in order to prevent this from happening often.

If you built upon a hill or an area with a lot of ups and downs (not flat), then it can be difficult to setup again in a new spot, because of the design of your home. Blueprinting your C.A.M.P. in such a way that it’s easy to rebuild can make this much less of a headache, which leads us to our next section.

Blueprinting Your C.A.M.P.

Blueprinting allows you to select things from your C.A.M.P. and combine them into 1 piece that you can place in your C.A.M.P. The reason that you Blueprint things is because you will want to move your C.A.M.P. at some point, or you get unlucky and it vanishes, and this way you can put it back together how you want. The game will automatically Blueprint your whole house if your C.A.M.P. vanishes, however, it isn’t always easy to setup in the new location this way.

It is advised, therefore, that once you get your C.A.M.P. more or less how you want it, that you Blueprint your Foundation and your House separately. This will allow you, when moving your C.A.M.P., to place the Foundation first. Placing the Foundation is much easier, and once you’ve found a suitable place, you can just snap your House down on top of it. Consider doing this to save time if you move often, or your C.A.M.P. keeps vanishing. You do not need to Blueprint things outside your House, because they will most likely have to be placed again individually.

blueprint

When you Blueprint you can add many things to make one cohesive construction. Some times you will not see it in your Blueprints tab until you log out and back in.

C.A.M.P. Budget

The next thing you need to know is that you have a C.A.M.P. Budget that determines just how many things you can build. Once you reach the limit of this Budget you will not be able to build any more things in your C.A.M.P. unless you deconstruct other items. It’s very important to note that items that are under the “Stored” tab DO count towards this Budget, so it is advised that you don’t Store anything very long term.

In addition, not everything is created equal in the way that it is counted towards your Budget. For example Walls and Fences don’t use too much of it, but Turrets take up quite a bit. Pay attention to how much Budget is used when placing items, and don’t overdue it with Turrets. Try to keep your Turrets to around 4 or 5 in order to be able to build a C.A.M.P. that isn’t the size of a small shack. There is currently no way to raise this Budget, so you managing it is imperative.

budget

You cannot build anymore once you reach max Budget. Remember things in your Stored tab count towards this total.

Generating Power at Your C.A.M.P.

May things your can build in your C.A.M.P. require Power in order to use (like Water Purifiers). In order to build these you will need to find the plans, and once they are built you will need to connect them the structure requiring Power. To do this simply look at the structure that needs Power and press “Triangle”, and then move to the Generator and press “Triangle” again. This will connect the two things, granting it Power. You will need several Generators to Power everything you want Powered.

generator

Generators give you power, which is used to run your Water Purifier and among other things.

C.A.M.P. Food and Water

Ideally our Fallout 76 C.A.M.P. would grow Food and have fresh Water for you to drink, which will make some of the survival aspects of the game just a bit easier. You can plant Fruit and Vegetables if you have them in your inventory and you have Fertilizer, and these will spawn more Fruit and Vegetables regularly. For this reason, make sure you save things like Corn and Mutfruit when you find them, so that you can plant them later.

Water can be obtained by building a Water Pump, or by building a Water Purifier, that grants Purified Water regularly. If you built your C.A.M.P. near water then you can build more advanced versions that generate more Water. You will need to hook these Water Purifiers up to a Generator in order to use them, and you will need to find the Plans for them before they can be built.

Water Purifier

Water Purifiers are a great source of Water, and they are not hard to make.

Plans and Recipes

Plans and Recipes can be found randomly around the Wasteland in Fallout 76, and once found they can be read in order to gain the ability to build them. If you wish to have more advanced equipment around your C.A.M.P. you will need to find and learn these Plans. Recipes will simply let you make more things like Healing Salves, at your Cooking Station, that can be used to assist you.

plans

You can add things like Bastketball Hoops when you find plans for them around the game map.

Defending Your Camp

As mentioned above, your C.A.M.P. will come under attack from time to time, and you will need Defenses in order to protect it when you are not there. The 2 best ways to do this are by building in such a way that enemies cannot reach you, and by using Turrets. Turrets use a lot of your C.A.M.P. Budget though, so you want to be smart about how you place them, and make them cover a wide field of vision.

When you build your C.A.M.P. , if you build it in a wide open field (for example), then you will have to defend every possible direction that enemies can come from. While this makes it easy to plan out and build structures more easily, it also leaves you vulnerable to attacks. For this reason, it may be better to build into the side of a cliff, or somewhere that prevents enemies from coming from 1 or 2 sides. This will allow you to use less Turrets, and focus them in 2 or 3 directions instead of 4. Note that taking the Perk Home Defense will allow you to build more advanced Turrets and Traps, so consider getting it if you need it.

turrets

You won’t want more than about 4 Turrets if you wish to build anything remotely large.

You may also need to defend against other players, who can damage your C.A.M.P. or steal your Food and Water if they wish. The best ways of doing this, if you so choose, are by putting Locks on your Water Purifier and or your House. You can Lock items from your Build menu, but it does cost resources. Keep in mind that Locked doors and Purifiers will require Lockpicking to open, so if you don’t have these Perks, it may be more of a hassle than it’s worth.

Final Tips

Building vertical is often much easier than building horizontal, and is much more secure. If you build just one small foundation with a room leading up, there is almost no way for your things to be destroyed by enemies. If you build a Water Purifier, be sure to enclose it in something that is locked and protected so enemies cannot attack it.

Place Turrets up high, no matter how you build your C.A.M.P. Many enemies that attack are melee focused, and placing Turrets up high will allow them to fire down without taking damage. It also gives them a wider field of view and optimizes their line of sight. Try putting them on your roof or in a tower of some sort.

It is nearly impossible to prevent other players from stealing your Food, even if you can put a lock on your Water Purifier to stop them from taking your water. The best way to prevent this though is building somewhere remote, placing high walls around your perimeter that they cannot jump over, and making the entrance a locked door. Most players, however, leave their C.A.M.P. unlocked to assist other players.
