Fan favorites FromSoftware and Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin may be working together, as per an industry rumor. This rumor made the rounds in April, and we skipped reporting it even though large outlets took a bite because it was a bit too mind-blowing. But all of that changes today as we realize that GRRM might have confirmed it himself.

FromSoftware working with GRRM? Game of Thrones x Dark Souls crossover could actually break the wheel

As the last episode of HBO’s Game of Thrones aired and the internet threw its 1/10 stars, I thanked my Dark Souls training for protecting my TV from being hit by anything in the room due to the incredibly dissatisfying conclusion brought about by the last season. Today, those two came together even closer as I find this particular gem in GRRM’s website:

And me? I’m still here, and I’m still busy. As a producer, I’ve got five shows in development at HBO (some having nothing whatsoever to do with the world of Westeros), two at Hulu, one on the History Channel. I’m involved with a number of feature projects, some based upon my own stories and books, some on material created by others. There are these short films I am hoping to make, adaptations of classic stories by one of the most brilliant, quirky, and original writers our genre has ever produced. I’ve consulted on a video game out of Japan. And then there’s Meow Wolf…

Ok, back up. Re-read.

I’ve consulted on a video game out of Japan

Now, the rumor sounds to have more meat… we know from a Japanese interview with Miyazaki by 4gamer.net that FromSoftware is working on 2 yet unannounced titles (see this article from January 2019), and of course everyone expects something to be announced at E3, Gamescom or TGS – so could this mystery title be related to Game of Thrones?

There are many rumors of Game of Thrones games going about, from an MMO, to a souls-like all the way through every possible medium (card games, board games, mobile…) but it could well be consulting for some other of the author’s many IPs, or completely original consultation for a new Souls-like medieval game?

I did a triple take with this one.

Gematsu Rumor

Outlet Gematsu published an UNCORROBORATED rumor that hits some expected points of any upcoming From game (E3 announcement, Bandai publishing) and some surprising ones:

A person familiar with ongoings at From Software has told Gematsu that the project—said to be known internally as “GR” (Gematsu has been asked to only share the acronym) and in development for the past three years—is an open-world title (with horse riding) and collaboration between Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin published by Bandai Namco, which will be officially announced at Microsoft’s E3 2019 press conference. While we have not been able to verify this information through additional sources, we have decided to share what we have heard in light of R.R. Martin’s blog post.

Gameradar Leaks

UNCORROBORATED Leaks from Gameradar also add:

But don’t assume it’s going to be set in the world of Game of Thrones, as rumours have it that this game – titled Great Rune, supposedly – is set in the Norse world, exploring Norse mythology and all its dark legends.

As it’s focus is the Norse mythos, like God of War and the rumoured Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok…

Whisperings began circling on the internet in early 2019 and went into a lot more detail about what players can expect: you’ll be invading kingdoms and stealing the powers of their rulers after a FromSoftware-style battle, which will then serve you well when you have to fight other kings.

From are likely to return to Souls-likes

This is a reminder of our coverage of the hints for the next title that we can expect from Dark Souls and Sekiro creators, can you fill in the blanks?

FromSoftware learned Unreal Engine for Deracine, and said they weren’t done with souls:

By no means are we going to stray ourselves away from the more or less more mainstream games that we’re known for,” Miyazaki continues resiliently, in the dark. “I think this segue will only give us good learnings, good experiences, and that’s something that we can reflect on and will have a good influence on the other games that we’d work on in the future. It’s been really good learning experience.

Demon’s Souls Servers closed Down simultaneously, making people wonder if a remaster was in the works.

After two years, Sekiro launch likely means FromSoftware is ready to release several titles in the next few years

FromSoftware was hiring for a Dark Fantasy position in 2017 (too late to be Sekiro).

We know, from interviews with Miyazaki, that one of the three confirmed titles From Software is working on is a “Dark Fantasy” RPG. Miyazaki also stated:

The second thing is that one of the new titles I’ve been working on will probably comply with the expectations from the fans in straightforward manner.

From an interview with IGN

Now this could mean a new game, or a remaster…however, we have found proof that From is likely hiring for a “Console, Dark Fantasy, Realistic” “Creature” and “Background” temporary designer. If the title was a remaster, new creature and character design would be unlikely! Further, 2017 is too late for creature design for Sekiro, that begun conceptualization in 2015

The fact the position is temporary means that whatever is being developed is exceeding the permanent staff of the studio, and the fact it’s an artistic position suggests the project is in advanced stages of production, with conceptualization and the engine having been largely completed, and the dress-up part of the game now being worked on.

FromSoftware is not mentioned in this listing, but it specifies the location of the offices is 7 minutes from Sasakusa Sta., Keio Line. This is where FromSoftware’s offices are!

What do you think the titles that they are working on could be? Let us know in the comments below.
