One of the most exciting announcements to come out of The Game Awards 2018 earlier this month was the news of Obsidian’s next RPG The Outer Worlds. While some details have been released, in a recent article more information has been shared about the worlds.

The Outer Worlds Will Not Be a Traditional Open-World RPG

In an article released by Kotaku, apparently The Outer Worlds won’t follow the usual open-world design but will consist of different locations that you can travel between. Kotaku have seen recent footage of the game and reports the two different planets that you discover, are split into multiple areas. Each of these parts will be quite big, giving players plenty of room to explore, but will not be as extensive as an open-world.

Obsidian’s Mikey Downling made a comment on the size of the world by comparing it to their previous game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II:

While we aren’t discussing the exact amount of areas, a good bit of context for the approach is to think of what we did in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, with potentially more ground to cover and explore in each area.

The Outer Worlds is set to release on Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC sometime in 2019.
