Microsoft and Sony Announces Cloud Gaming Partnership

According to an article by Kotaku, the two gaming companies Microsoft and Sony will team up to work on a “new cloud-based solutions for gaming experiences.” So far there hasn’t been much detail in terms of what this collaboration will bring to either Xbox or Playstation, but it certainly opens some doors.

In a press release from Microsoft, it mentions that the partnership will be in relation to Microsoft Azure and a streaming service:

Under the memorandum of understanding signed by the parties, the two companies will explore joint development of future cloud solutions in Microsoft Azure to support their respective game and content-streaming services.

This could mean the next generation of console for Sony, Playstation 5 could have a cloud gaming system under Microsoft Azure. Putting two giants together could benefit both in terms of resources, making a streaming service that may exist on both Xbox and Playstation.

This latest news comes after the recent announcement of Stadia from Google which was shared at the last GDC. Also a cloud based streaming platform, Stadia aims to eliminate the need for hefty gaming setups, allowing players to access games on a multiple range of screens, from tablets to tv using the online streaming service. Joining forces between companies could give Microsoft and Sony the upper-hand in facing Stadia.

But this is not the first that either company has worked on in terms of game streaming, Microsoft announced Project xCloud last year and Sony with Playstation Now, allowing players to stream games to PS4 and PC.

The president and CEO of Sony shared in their press release that although both companies have faced each as competition in certain areas business, they have also been a “key business partner”:

For many years, Microsoft has been a key business partner for us, though of course the two companies have also been competing in some areas. I believe that our joint development of future cloud solutions will contribute greatly to the advancement of interactive content.

It will be interesting how this joint development will work between the two companies, as they both have consoles that have been in competition throughout the years.
