Rumour: PS5 and Xbox Series X Reveal Plans Moved Due to E3 2020 Cancellation
E3 2020 was cancelled due to the ongoing situation, with many announcements that were scheduled for that week, have now been moved outside of the E3 2020 week from June 9 to 11 according to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad.
In a tweet Ahmad explained how some reveals were planned for “much earlier” but will now happen “much later”. According to this tweet the “first proper next-gen console/games showcase” was actually suppose to happen much earlier than what is now planned. This was due to Covid-19 which is having an affect on plans in the gaming industry:
This is the one time I will actually add a caveat, for the last sentence in this case, as we are living through an unprecedented situation and this is the one time where external factors such as COVID-19 could actually change plans right at the last minute. But we’ll see.

Adding to the rumour the website VGC claims to support this Tweet, by sharing that the Playstation 5 reveal was recently set for May. Microsoft also had plans for reveals in May, and were to hold an additional E3 digital showcase. It doesn’t specify what kind of reveals Microsoft were to make, whether games, release date of the Xbox Series X or something else.
-
One person with knowledge of Sony’s plans told VGC that the company was recently planning to hold its significant PlayStation 5 reveal in May.
-
It’s also been claimed Microsoft is planning reveals for May, in addition to a digital E3 showcase, which matches with what VGC has been told.
VGC also detailed that the pandemic has caused disruptions to SIE’s marketing plans, which included the delay of The Last of Us Part II, so it is not certain whether they will still be going ahead with the May date.
But we already know that the week of E3 2020 will not be without announcements as IGN has their own “Summer of Gaming” event in early June, which plans to cover a number of publishers and developers. Valve is holding their own “The Steam Game Festival: Summer Edition” which will happen over on their Steam platform. ESA have also said they will help to promote news and announcements via their dedicated website instead of holding a digital event.
Both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are planned for release this holiday season.
